Taylor & Patchen files Amicus Brief on behalf of BASF and Los Angeles County Bar Association

Taylor & Patchen – together with McDermott Will & Emery – recently represented the Bar Association of San Francisco and the Los Angeles County Bar Association as amici curiae in the Ninth Circuit and the California Supreme Court in proceedings arising out of the bankruptcy of the Heller Ehrman firm.  The amici briefed the question whether a dissolved law firm has an economic interest that survives dissolution in its clients’ ongoing uncompleted hourly fee matters.  The amici argued that granting a firm such an interest would contravene basic ethical principles, increase the prejudice to clients at dissolution, and damage firms and their creditors by increasing the frequency and cost of dissolution.  A copy of the amicus brief is available here: download.
